Hitting The Town

Nyx is still in foster care, and every weekend, we go out and about in Portland.

Last weekend, we went to the Oregon Humane Society's Octoberfest at the Hollywood Grocery Outlet. Had a lot of great conversations with folks over beer sampling about dog ownership, rescue, and fostering. Even though Nyx isn't available for adoption through Oregon Humane, they were kind enough to let us attend in search for her forever home.

After that social foray, we swapped out adult pups, and went to the non-Profit, Oregon Public House pub on Dekum street. Foot traffic wasn't what we were hoping for there, but the Octoberfest food was fantastic and the company was good.

Training Begins

Nyx has been with us long enough that she is beginning her training.

Training this week will include the following skills:

  • Establishing a marker word - Nyx is being trained with 'good'
  • Improving name recognition.
  • Socializing with a collar touch so a stranger can reach for her collar without incident.
  • Sit on the side.
  • Come front and sit.
  • Stand for inspection/foot cleaning
  • Down from a stand.
  • Step back to get into position for any of the above behaviors.
Nyx is being trained right now with hot lures and positive reinforcement. Here is some video from her first week on the 'job'.

Here are some more pictures from Nyx being spoiled:

Nyx is still waiting for her forever home! Please consider adding her to your pack (or starting your pack with her) today!

Onyx 'Nyx'

Onyx, "Nyx"

TO ADOPT
Approx. 8 months old
Female
Spayed/Up to Date on Shots

Received from a high kill CA shelter with her sister, Nyx is a very good girl.

Nyx gets along well with other dogs of all shapes and sizes and is appropriate and submissive upon first meeting a dog. She does well with dog savvy cats, but does show interest in chasing them if they run.

She is very people friendly and seems to like children a lot! She wants to please and is highly food motivated as well as toy motivated. She will make an excellent Obedience, Agility or Sports dog prospect for someone who wants a fast dog with a nice build.

Here are some pictures of her in her foster home!

She is very agile and likes to sit on the cat bed and look outside while I work.

While she sleeps in her crate at night, she would much prefer to be in bed with her head on the pillow.

Here she is snuggling with her 'foster' sister!

Nyx looks like she will stay relatively small (under 50 lbs) given that her adult teeth are in and her feet are still very petite.

Update: 8-23

Being a foster dog in our house is hard work. This is Nyx's favorite sleeping position.

Update: 9-6

While there has been a little interest in Nyx, so far we haven't received a single application for her. It's hard being a plain black dog!

She's been going to the Normandale dog park every other day after work, and sits patiently on the couch waiting for me to finish up with my calls during my work day. We will be starting on manners and obedience this next week since she is now having very few accidents and is sleeping through the night outside of the crate with no damage! While Nyx is still obsessed with chasing squirrels and has added cats and birds to that list, leash manners are coming along nicely to make this behavior more controlled. We have not been correcting for prey drive or inhibiting it outside of the home since this little girl would make an EXCELLENT sport or agility dog, so we're trying to keep that drive intact for a potential home.

Inside the home she has only gotten more respectful of our cat, who once more rules the home with a fuzzy paw.

She also boarded at SNIFF this last week, and received glowing reviews from the staff! We hope to get her cleared for daycare before the end of September so that she can start attending their Happy Hours with her two big foster sisters!
